Just another historic day in Galveston, Texas! This island has many first! We are a very proud little island city, at the very least! We can go back to Galveston's history and find our city ahead of time. On June 19th 1865 on The Strand at 22nd street Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, which demanded: "absolute equality" among enslaved people and slaveholders.
